Happy Friday-before-Christmas!

a summary of my week- lots of time spent outside, enjoying the beautiful weather in Phoenix at my parents'.

First of all, how on earth is it already Friday? I know if you go back in my blogs I'm sure I sound like a broken record come the holiday season but it really does sneak up on you! Luckily Christmas shopping is done and now I can relax and enjoy it, but still...slow down! I haven't much time to blog this week, let alone set aside time for reading blogs to fuel my links post, but I do have a few things to share with all of you wonderful people!

Some things that made me happy this past week: spending time with my family down in Mesa, having a fun night with Sarah watching her wedding video, getting my hair cut and colored, getting to workout even more than usual thanks to my sweet Mom watching Henry, enjoying a great lunch at Pita Jungle, seeing my old friends completely happy with where they are in life, discovering new music, making travel plans for 2012, getting excited for Amber Joy to be here this weekend, and realizing that I don't have much on my wish list outside of happiness and health for my family.  Pretty great feeling considering I sometimes find myself getting a little too wrapped up in the material side of the holidays. It's nice to just focus on what really matters.

Pita Jungle with Mom and Lauren

I also have a couple blog-related things to share:
  • I've recently gotten a few emails asking about my "9 to 5" feature. I still have a few to share, but I'm taking a mini-break from them so I can get the last 3-4 organized. I am not taking new submissions, but the ones I have will be up sometime soon. I also have a few "Slice of" posts to share (remember those?) so look for those early 2012.
  • I wanted to say thank you for all of your music recommendations in my Spotify post! I've checked out all of the new-to-me artists mentioned and just really want all of you to know how much I appreciate it! New music is the best.
And now, some links! I hope you have the best holiday weekend. I'll be back later with a little peek at our Christmas decor. xoxo

Congratulations to my pal Mara for being the ModCloth Blogger of the Moment.

Is there any end to Angela's creativity? She's amazing.

Go say hi to Amber Joy and maybe we can all coerce into posting more!

Aren't these custom Polaroid necklaces great? Molly was kind enough to make a couple for me and I love them. You might see some familiar faces in this post too!

Cranberries and pears and tarts, oh my!

Okay, I would love love love to be able to look through all of my grandparents' and parents' slides! So cool.

If you needed yet another reason to love the fabulous Katie, here you go!

Did you want to advertise your blog or shop in January? I have just a couple of spots left if you'd like to try it out.

Are you making any goals for 2012? How about 52?

If you're in the mood to check out some beautiful photos, head over to Silje's blog.

Seriously, bookmark this homemade food gift guide for next year. Great stuff.

Blind dates...you just never know!

Oh King Krule, I love you.

This gift guide includes so many great, unique items to lust over.

A life-changing moment with Steve Jobs, thanks to my dear friend Lance.

And finally, a brand new to me blog I've been enjoying, and a few old favorites: one, two and three.

Old friends & Spotify

terrafroyo

Sometimes all you need is a night with one of your oldest and dearest friends, reminiscing about college and talking about how fast life goes by and how beautiful it all is. So thankful for this girl and so thankful for friends like her. Terra was my "little sis" in our Pi Phi days and we have the most special bond. You know those friends that have seen you in every stage of your life, seen you at your best (and worst), and love you all the same? That's this girl. Love her, and I love that we got to have a fun night together while she was in town from Denver.

Now I'm in bed, enjoying my (and Hank's) newest obsession...Spotify. I think we're a little behind on this, but seriously, I don't know how I survived without it. Okay, that's dramatic. But it is pretty great. My friends Alana, Nate and Shirley turned us onto it at a party last weekend and described it as being part Pandora, part Napster, part social networking beast. I was sold when they explained that there are no ads or breaks in music, and you can listen to ANYTHING your heart desires with no limit. Granted, the premium account is $10 a month but considering how much I listen to music it's a small price to pay. Today I've been on quite the 90s kick and my main music of choice this evening been TLC. Remember CrazySexyCool? So good. And so junior high. Next up is Aaliyah's "Back and Forth" and Blackstreet's "No Diggity." And I might even round it out with a little "My Boo" by Ghostown DJs ;)

With that said, I have a couple of questions for you. One, have you tried Spotify yet? What do you think? And two, do you have any must-listen-to bands you'd like to recommend to me? I love all sorts of music from rap to country, classical to metal.

Happy four days before Christmas!

Tattoo Tuesday V.101

Name and blog name: Abi at Vanilla & Lace and Josh
Age: Abi- 21 Josh- 28
Occupation: Abi: Fashion designer/dressmaker for my shop, Josh: Musician and author
Age of first tattoo: Abi- 16 and Josh- 18
Favorite and featured tattoo: Abi- typewriter, Josh- chestpiece
Artist/shop/location of feature tattoo: Abi: Silje Røe Hagland at Scapegoat in Portland, OR (she has a Tattoo Tuesday of her own!). Josh: Chris Anderson at California tattoo in Savannah GA

1) Tell us about your featured tattoo- is there a background story or special meaning? Why did you choose this particular piece of art?

Abi: The typewriter represents that talented husband of mine and his love for writing. It's the start of a half sleeve dedicated to him and us.

Josh: I had this romantic idea to get a tattoo for my wife even though (at the time) I had no wife or girlfriend. I used this to get Abi to marry me, lest my tattoo be silly.

2) Do you have any other tattoos? If so, what do you have and where?

Abi: I also have the sleepwalker boy from Sigur Ros album art and the MAC cosmetics logo

Josh: I've lost count. I have a full sleeve and a half-sleeve, pieces on my legs, back, hands, neck, ears and feet. These include, but are not limited to: Gregor Samsa from Kafka's "The Metamorphosis," Jason Voorhees, the Agnus Dei, flies, a baby mummy and Calvin and Hobbes.

3) Do you plan on getting more?

Abi: Of course!
Josh: Yes.

4) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)? Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them?

Abi: For the most part people are accepting and open to the ones I have.. but I'm not heavily tattooed so that could change quick! Even so, I get all the regular questions/comments like "You'll regret that when you're old!" or "I thought you didn't want to be a trashy mom".. those are always nice.

Josh: I grew up in an impossibly small town in southeast-Georgia. To have many tattoos in said town ten years ago was a bit unconventional; I was banned from the church I had grown up in and still receive the occasional sneer when I visit home. As a missionary for a decade, folks have been surprisingly accepting of a heavily tattooed fellow.

5) Any advice for those interested in getting tattooed but haven't gotten one yet?

Abi: It's been said a million times but I'll say it again.. Don't get tattooed by just anyone. Do your research, good tattoos are worth the extra money. And don't take the advice from my husband below.

Josh: Go to a tattoo shop, close your eyes, spin around in a circle with your index finger extended and have whatever you land on tattooed on your throat. If this is too much, I recommend a strawberry with wings or a monkey surfing a banana.

Now and Then

2002 and 2011

The other day I was reading back in my Livejournal and I came across an entry from 2008. I scrolled down through the comments and noticed that my best friend Sarah and I had had a little conversation right there about "fixing" our friendship.  It struck me as notable, because this was the summer after I had gotten married. I remember pretty vividly not being in each other's lives very much during that time, but reading through our exchange there on that old website brought back all of the details I had somehow forgotten.

Sarah and I had gone to the same high school but didn't actually know each other over those four years. It wasn't until my sophomore year in college that we met via a mutual friend, who just so happened to be her then-boyfriend. He invited me over to hang out with their group of friends one night, and I still remember meeting Sarah for the very first time. She was this tiny little thing- part ballerina, part huge light-up-the-room smile, and her positive energy and excitement for life was contagious. We had an instant "oh my god I love you!" friendship connection. We spent hours and hours talking, and from that moment on we were inseparable. We did everything together- sleepovers, shopping, long nights out dancing, saw each other through tears and heartache, and later when she broke up with that boyfriend, we dated two new boys that happened to be friends too.

But then things changed and somehow we drifted apart. There were never hard feelings, but she got into a serious relationship at the same time I moved in with another group of friends, and we fell out of our norm. It would have been impossible to keep our friendship going at the same intensity- as life changes relationships change too. And although we understood this, we let what could have been a shift turn into a total end. Maybe it was the excitement of the new loves in our lives, maybe it was simple laziness, but soon enough our girly sleepovers were replaced with overnights with our significant others and our all night chat fests were interrupted by date nights. And even though we both got this shift- we each were so happy in these new lives- we didn't put the effort in with each other, we assumed we'd always be there, and consequently our friendship failed.

For years we didn't talk much. I thought about reaching out all of the time, and later I found out that she did too. It hurt a lot, losing someone I considered to be one of my closest friends, but I was never angry. I fully understood, but it was still sad. Time went by, and soon I was engaged to Hank. Sarah and her now-husband Andy came to the wedding and I still remember them being some of the last people there to see us off at the end of the night. I missed her so badly, and I still remember feeling sad she wasn't up there with me as a bridesmaid.

Over those next few months though we started talking more. We got back in touch, and we made plans to meet for lunch at Pita Jungle one summer day. I remember sitting in my car beforehand feeling so anxious- I felt as if so much had changed. What if we were totally different people? What if we didn't get along anymore? What if lunch was terribly awkward? What if, what if? But lunch came and went, and it was absolutely wonderful. It felt as if no time had passed- we laughed, we cried, then we laughed some more. She was still the same friend I'd always known. Yes, everything was different, we were different, but at our cores we were the same silly, fun-loving girls we'd always been. Our friendship had just taken a little break.

That fall we got back to being close. We spent weekends together, having sleepovers and crazy nights out. And for the next three years we continually put in the effort. It's weird though, to think back to that time we weren't in each others' lives. And even weirder was to stumble upon that aforementioned Livejournal comment, where Sarah talks about how sad it is that we aren't friends but that if it mattered, it was up to us to make the effort. "You take people for granted when you think they'll always be there and then POOF! one day they aren't and they've moved on..." It's remarkable to me to be able to see the turning point in our friendship- to see the moment when we both decide to move forward and start anew. I feel so grateful that we did decide to put forth effort, and at the same time it's horrible to think about us not doing that. I can't imagine my life without her.

I feel lucky to call quite a few amazing women my friends. Many of my closest friends don't live near by- one is off at college, another lives two hours south- but in each of these relationships, effort is so important. I might not talk to them everyday, and some not every week, but at the root of it, we know that we are there for each other. We keep it going. I am incredibly guilty of getting so wrapped up in my own life that I fail at holding up my end of the the friendship, but I consciously work at it and as I've gotten older I've gotten a little better at it. It can be hard, but what it comes down to is this: a connection is a connection, and in this life we meet so few people we genuinely click with that it would be a shame to not to put forth the effort to have that person in your life.

I thought of this as I stood up at Sarah's wedding this fall, as her Matron of Honor. I thought about how far we had come, abut how we almost lost such an important part of our lives. It's a true lesson in the power of action and just following through with the things that are in your heart. So often we think things like "I miss this person," or "I wish they were still in my life." Friendships and people can at times come and go as life changes, but I wonder if any of you have someone that you miss too. An old friend you fell our of touch with, a disagreement over something silly that you can't even remember now. Maybe you didn't put in effort, felt guilty, then avoided the situation. I've been there. Cheesy as it sounds, if any of this resonated with you, I encourage you to just make a call, send an email, and let that friend know you're thinking of them. I think about Sarah and how were went from years of not talking to spending a night like we did tonight, sitting on my old bed at my parents', giggling and tearing up while watching her wedding video. It's hard to move forward sometimes, but in the end I feel that if you have the desire to make the effort then you truly have nothing to lose. Because honestly, why not?

Thanks for reading. I hope you have the best night. :)

30th Birthdays and Early Christmases

What a weekend! It's been such a good past couple of days and despite a trip to the mall, my holiday spirit is still in tact. Friday we headed down to my parents' to spend time with family, get our Christmas shopping completed, celebrate our friend Jeffs' 30th birthday, and have an early holiday on Sunday with my Aunt Pat and Uncle Bob. Needless to say the last two days have been busy, but definitely in a good way.

Friday night we headed down south and spent some quality time hanging out with my parents' before heading to bed early. My Mom has converted the two upstairs bedrooms into guest rooms, so Henry sleeps in what used to be my sisters' bedroom and Hank and I sleep in my old room. It's a far cry from what it used to look like in junior high and high school (I had pictures and posters plastered in every corner of the room), but it's still fun to sleep up there- I'm always flooded with so many memories. If I'm feeling especially nostalgic, my big closet is filled with boxes and boxes of photos, notes from friends, and various treasures from back in the day. There have been so many nights I've gotten lost in those boxes, and it's incredibly fun (and usually embarrassing) to sift through all of it.

Saturday morning Hank and I headed out on a little daytime date. We first stopped by Green for lunch then spent the afternoon Christmas shopping. This year I tried to do most of our shopping in town, but there were a few items we had to pick up while down in the valley.  It was such a fun day though, and I most enjoyed just walking around and spending time with Hank...and ending our day with frozen yogurt.  I need to talk about this frozen yogurt trip for a minute too because it was probably the best combination I've ever had- Yogurtland's Madagascar Vanilla Bean with their Kona Coffee flavor. Delicious!

After shopping we came home and got ready for Jeff's 30th birthday party, whose wife Erin is a good friend of mine.  I've written about her many times before, but Erin and I met my freshman year of college at NAU when we both lived in Sechrist (one of the freshman dorms). We instantly clicked, and both ended up rushing, pledging, and joining Pi Phi. We spent all of college side by side, and have had some great times together. Since we all graduated from NAU back in 2004 our group of friends has stayed in tact, and it's pretty neat to go through so many of life's milestones together. Erin and I even had our sons just months apart. This past weekend her husband Jeff turned 30, and Erin threw him a Mad Men-themed party. It was a ton of fun, and all of the little details she put together were awesome. I'm not a big drinker and Hank doesn't drink at all, but it was still so fun to see all of the signature cocktails being made. Hank even got in on the action with one of the fake cigarettes pictured below and a Shirley Temple. :) It was a great night spent with really great people.

Then today we had an early Christmas with my Aunt and Uncle since we won't be seeing them next weekend. We ate a big dinner then had fun watching Henry open his presents. I know I've probably already said this 100x, but celebrating holidays with Henry is the best. He makes everything so much more fun. My favorite part of today though would definitely have to have been sitting around the dining room table with my Grandma, Mom, Aunt and sister girl-talking about everything and anything under the sun. We probably scared Lauren from ever wanting to have babies (birth story overload) but it was just so much fun talking for so long.

Weekend links!

loving his new drum toy from his Auntie Shirley!

It's been a half-good week, half-bad week, due to my weird up and down moods post-weaning (still trying to muster up some excitement to finish my post on that). But it's Friday and that means the weekend is almost here, which means lots of family fun. I swear, on Mondays Hank and I are already planning out our next weekend and we look forward to it all week long. And this weekend is going to be a good one- we are going to be celebrating a friend's 30th birthday Mad Men-style and finishing up our holiday shopping.

As for today Henry and I just got home from running some errands and he is down for his afternoon nap. Or kind of down I should say...the past couple of days he's been fighting it a bit so he's currently just sitting there playing with his feet. Silly guy. While I cross my fingers he lays down soon, I thought I'd hop on here really quick to share some links.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Hello, Santa!

Santacollage

A year has come and gone, and my baby isn't a little tiny baby anymore. Just take a look at this photo! Tonight we went to visit Santa and Henry just loved him. We've been reading Christmas books and looking at photos of Santa Claus so I think that helped- and wouldn't you agree that our Santa is pretty great? He just looks so jolly to me, and he's super sweet too.

Growing up my parents had my sister and me take photos with Santa from our first Christmas until we finally refused to continue a few years ago. I can still remember the mortification of being 15 years old and having to sit on Santa's lap for my Mom's yearly photo. I made the biggest fuss, but in the end I always did it, because I knew how much it meant to her. Now at 29 I can look at Santa photos from when I was 1, all the way up to age 26. Impressive, right? That would make for an awesome blog post- especially seeing all of my hair and fashion choices over the years; I was an 80s child don't forget! And now that I don't actually have to be in the photos, it's so much more fun to take our little guy. I can't wait to display all of his holiday pictures just like my parents did (amidst much protesting of course)...but now I totally get why my Mom loved them so much. And the longer I'm a parent, the more and more I say things like that. I think at one point in my teen years I may have even said something along the lines of "when I'm a mom I will NEVER make my kids do this!" while stomping angrily away I'm sure.  And now take a look at me!

Merry almost-Christmas, everyone!
